External Overlay · Path of Exile 1 & 2
Draws what the game does not show you.
Monsters, items, map detail, Atlas markers. It reads; it never presses a key.
It attaches to either game on its own, with no process selector. It is part of FollowApp — one download, one sign-in; the ▶ Overlay button in the FollowApp window starts it and the ⚙ beside it opens its options. Every FollowBot, AutoBot and CraftBot plan includes one Overlay instance; the plan below is for the Overlay on its own, or for one more.
Included with any other plan · on its own $7.50 / month or $15.00 / 3 months — see every price
What it does
It draws information over the game: monsters, items, map detail and Atlas markers the game does not show you.
It does not automate anything and it does not press keys — it reads the client and draws on top of it.
Everything below is a checkbox in the overlay's own window, and every marker category has its own Scale field.
Monsters, before they are on screen
Normal, magic, rare and unique markers, each toggled on its own, with optional health and energy shield bars.
Items worth stopping for
Headhunter, Mageblood and Ventor's Gamble marked on the ground, and live price tags on ground labels — unidentified uniques included — with a Min: threshold in the attached game's unit.
The map, revealed
External MapHack with optional labels and pathfinding, plus Atlas markers and pointers to them.
The better altar choice
Altar Highlight marks the better choice on an Eldritch altar from your own ordered whitelist and blacklist, with a fallback order of Player, Monster and Boss modifiers for when nothing on your lists is offered.
It reads; it never writes
There is no input, no automation and no key press anywhere in it. Start it, tick what you want, play the game yourself.
Markers
Each row is its own checkbox in the overlay window, and each one has its own Scale field beside it —
so a rare-monster diamond and a Headhunter marker do not have to be the same size on your screen.
Monsters
| Option | What it draws |
|---|---|
Normal Monsters | A marker for every normal-rarity monster the client knows about. |
Magic Monsters | The same for magic monsters. |
Rare Monsters | The same for rares. The one most people leave on and turn the rest off. |
Unique Monsters | Bosses and unique spawns. |
Beast Markers | Capturable beasts. |
Abyss Spawns | Abyss spawns, with an optional Path drawing the crack's route so you can see where it is going before it gets there. |
Every category has its own Scale
Normal, magic, rare, unique, beast, abyss, abyss path, Headhunter / Mageblood and Ventor's each carry a separate Scale field. Turn rares down to a dot and leave uniques large, rather than accepting one size for everything.
Items
| Option | What it draws |
|---|---|
Headhunter / Mageblood | Marks them on the ground, at their own scale. |
Ventor's Gamble | The same, separately toggled. |
Loot Price Tags | Live prices on ground item labels, read from poe.ninja, unidentified uniques included. It predicts an unidentified unique's name from the ground art, so an unid drop is tagged with what it probably is. |
Min: | The price below which nothing is tagged, in the attached game's unit — chaos in Path of Exile, exalted in Path of Exile 2, divines for large values. It is what stops a full screen of one-chaos labels. |
Price tags are a hint, not a valuation
The prices come from poe.ninja and the current temporary league is detected automatically — you do not set it. When that
data is unavailable or stale, tags are missing or wrong, and the overlay has no way to tell you which. Tags are in the
attached game's own unit — chaos in Path of Exile, exalted in Path of Exile 2, divines for large values — and Min: is in that unit too.
Press F3 to re-fetch before you conclude a tag is broken.
Map
The layout of the zone and where the Atlas things are in it, drawn onto the game's own map.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
External MapHack | Reveals map detail the game has not drawn for you yet. |
Labels | Names what it reveals, rather than leaving you to read shapes. |
Pathfinding | Draws a route through the revealed layout. |
Atlas Markers | Atlas markers on the map. |
Pointers | Arrows toward Atlas markers that are off the edge of your view. |
F2 turns the map drawing off and on without stopping the overlay or losing your ticks — it is the key for getting a clear look at the screen for a moment. Numpad 8 toggles Pathfinding.
Altar Highlight
The better choice on an Eldritch altar, marked from your own lists. You still click it yourself.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
Enabled | Highlights the better choice on an Eldritch altar, from your own lists. |
Altar Mods | Opens the lists: an ordered Whitelist and a Blacklist, picked from the Searing Exarch upside mods, the Eater of Worlds upside mods and the downside mods. |
Fallback: | What to prefer when nothing on your lists is offered — Off (whitelist only), or an order of Player, Monster and Boss modifiers, for example Player > Monster > Boss. |
Display
Global settings — they apply to everything the overlay draws, not to one category.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
Icon Transparency | How solid the drawn icons are. |
Show Far Markers | Keeps drawing markers for things outside your immediate view. |
Show Monster Health | Health bars on marked monsters. |
Show Monster Energy Shield | Energy shield on marked monsters. |
Scale Icons With Map Zoom | Icons resize with the in-game map zoom instead of holding one size. |
Show Overlay FPS | The overlay's own frame rate, drawn in the corner. |
Multithreaded | Spreads the overlay's work across cores. |
Turn on Show Overlay FPS while you are setting up
It is the only way to tell whether an option you just ticked is costing you frames. Turn on one group at a time and watch the number. Once you have settled on your set, turn the readout back off.
Running it
Start the game, open FollowApp and sign in. Press the ⚙ next to ▶ Overlay to open the External Overlay options window, tick what you want and press Close. Then press ▶ Overlay.
One button, not two
▶ Overlay reads ■ Overlay while the overlay is running; press it again to stop. The options window can be opened again at any time from the ⚙; Close puts it away, and FollowApp stays open.
It finds the game itself
There is no process selector. It attaches to Path of Exile or Path of Exile 2 on its own, and reattaches if the client restarts.
Windowed fullscreen, always
In exclusive fullscreen the game owns the display output and nothing draws over it at all. That is not fixable on the overlay's side — change the game's display mode.
Scale beside it and Loot Price Tags with a Min: box. Along the bottom, Close.
Hotkeys
Three keys. That is the complete set.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
F2 | Toggle the map overlay on or off. The overlay keeps running and your options stay ticked. |
F3 | Refresh — redraws the map, re-reads the Atlas markers and re-fetches loot prices. Press this before you change a setting to fix stale data. |
Numpad 8 | Toggle Pathfinding on the map. |
Stopping it is the ■ Overlay button in the FollowApp window, not a key. Those three rows are every key the overlay listens for; there is no fourth one to look for.
What it does not do
- It does not automate anything and it does not press keys. It reads the game and draws. If you want a character played for you, that is FollowBot, and it is a different product and a different subscription.
- It will not draw in exclusive fullscreen. Windowed fullscreen is required, and there is no overlay-side workaround for it.
- Price tags can be stale, wrong or missing. They come from poe.ninja, and when that data is unavailable the tags are not right. Treat them as a hint, not a valuation.
- Reading is not the same as being invisible. It is still third-party software attached to the game client, and the FAQ’s honest answer applies to it as much as to anything else here.
- It is not a separate program any more. The Overlay used to be its own download; it now lives inside FollowApp and uses the same sign-in and the same key. It updates itself after most game patches — the release note says when a patch still needs a fresh FollowApp download — and it uses the same instance-based licensing as FollowBot, so it is not locked to one machine's hardware. If you still have the old standalone Overlay on disk, it is retired — delete it and use the ▶ Overlay button in FollowApp.
Questions
Does it work on Path of Exile 2?
Yes. The overlay attaches to either game, and it picks the running client itself — there is nothing to select.
One thing differs: Loot Price Tags shows prices in the attached game's own unit — chaos in Path of Exile, exalted in Path of Exile 2, divines for large values — and Min: is in that unit too.
Do I need FollowApp as well?
Yes — the Overlay is part of FollowApp now. One download, one sign-in: the ▶ Overlay button in the FollowApp window starts it and the ⚙ beside it opens its options. There is no separate Overlay download any more; the old standalone Overlay is retired.
Any FollowBot, AutoBot or CraftBot plan on your key already includes one Overlay instance. The Overlay-only plan is for people who want nothing else, or one more instance on top of what the other plans bring.
I started it and nothing appears over the game.
Almost always the game is in exclusive fullscreen. In that mode the game owns the display output and nothing can draw over it. Switch the game to windowed fullscreen and it appears.
If it is already windowed fullscreen, press F2 — the map drawing may be toggled off — and then F3 to redraw. After that, check the button in the FollowApp window reads ■ Overlay, which is what it reads while the overlay is running.
How do I start and stop it?
Start Path of Exile, open FollowApp and sign in. Press the ⚙ next to ▶ Overlay to open the External Overlay options window, tick the options you want and press Close. Then press ▶ Overlay.
The button reads ■ Overlay while the overlay is running; press it again to stop. The options window can be opened again at any time; FollowApp stays open throughout.
Are the price tags accurate?
They are as accurate as poe.ninja is, which is good for liquid items and unreliable for everything else. The league is detected automatically, unidentified unique names are predicted from the ground art, and the Min: field hides anything under your threshold — in the attached game's unit, chaos in Path of Exile and exalted in Path of Exile 2.
When the data is unavailable or stale you get missing or wrong tags rather than an error. Press F3 to re-fetch. Do not price a trade off a tag.
Will it slow the game down?
It costs frames, and how many depends entirely on which options you tick — far markers and a full set of monster rarities cost more than rares alone.
Turn on Show Overlay FPS, enable one group at a time, and watch the number. Multithreaded spreads the work across cores, and Icon Transparency and the per-category Scale fields let you keep a marker without it dominating the screen.
